What Does Hyper in Hyperconverged Stands For

What Does Hyper in Hyperconverged Stands For

The term hyperconverged storage has been around us for quite a long time now and the world businesses are using this infrastructure and more and more are still shifting to it. Sadly mentioning, the world has not really understood the term and this is the main reason why they have not been able to actually benefit all that was on offer.

Hyperconverged Infrastructure has been a very popular infrastructure for the enterprise and businesses since it was introduced and is still solving many use cases and is in use by a large number of business world over. On the other side of the coin, it is also a fact that the term is still confusing to users and clients, not to mention the laymen.

Understanding the Term First

First of all, the term Hyperconverged seems to be an improved version of converged infrastructure which might be true but not completely true. This is what may confuse so many people. Where Converged infrastructure was a hardware dependent infrastructure which used building blocks, Hyperconverged infrastructure is a software defined storage solution. This is such a distinctive point that it should not leave any doubt that hyperconverged has nothing to do with the word converged infrastructure.

The Infrastructure Needs to be Understood Too

The other confusion about the infrastructural details of hyperconverged cluster results in people not benefiting from the Hyperconvergence as much as it was supposed to be happening. If we dig the hyperconverged infrastructure a bit deeper, we will get to know that there is a big hype about it which is not totally correct and practical. For example, the infrastructure is not totally invincible and has some flaws in it such as a single point of failure is there.

The 3-2-1 Model for Infrastructure

This infrastructure is actually working on the same principle on which the legacy storage systems were working, and that is the 3-2-1 principal of storage architecture. The VMs in the hyperconverged infrastructure run three or even more clusters having host servers, which are then connected to each other using 2 switches, and all of these components are provided with a storage capacity of one storage device.

Resultantly, there is one single point of failure in the infrastructure which is not realized and considered by the enterprises when the time comes to decide on which infrastructure suits their requirements.

Conclusion

When the time comes to decide for the best storage solution such as hyperconverged infrastructure for an enterprise, there must not be any confusion left in the mind, so that the best decision can be made. If there are still some areas that are grey, the decision made can prove to be wrong and damaging to the business.
