Demystifying Cloud Backups & How Do They Work?

In today’s business environment where no one can afford data loss or downtime, data protection solutions are of high value. This is because data loss and downtime can have a very negative impact on revenue, productivity, customers and the overall reputation of the company.

This is why cloud backups are used in order to avoid all this and in this blog, we will explain how this works exactly.

Cloud Backups Vs Cloud Storage

Although they may seem similar, they are anything but. Cloud backup and cloud storage are often confused and considered as one, however in reality, this is not the case.

Cloud storage allows users to put their files, emails and other forms of data in a central cloud repository which can be easily accessed and shared with them. Cloud storage does not provide any or at least the same level of data protection as cloud backups. If data is lost, due to a disaster or ransomware or even a human error, it is lost forever.

Additionally, cloud storage requires users to manually move updated files to storage. While it is true that most cloud storage providers do offer File Sync which can ensure updated files are moved more frequently but if a file is deleted or infected with malware, not much can be done to restore it and it is lost forever, unless users pay the ransom.

Cloud backups on the other hand, are a more secure option that are more inclined towards data protection than the storage of data.

Cloud backups make copies of data and files, and updates them continuously. This way, even if the system gets infected or data is lost due to some other reason, all the files and data can easily be restored by restoring a clean copy of data whenever required.

How do Cloud Backups Work?

The working of cloud backups is pretty straight forward. After selecting the cloud backup service, users need to configure their Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) so that they can configure the cloud backup solution that meets their needs.

Next, users need to select all the files, servers, applications and other data that they want to back up. This can be done manually or with the recommended approach which is to schedule a copy of data, files, servers, applications and emails to be regularly pulled to a secure and encrypted cloud repository. This way, user data would be safe at all times.

Conclusion

Cloud backups are a great addition to any business that values its data and want to protect it. Cloud backups offer efficient and reliable data protection and are cost-effective. They are easy to set up and use which makes them a preferred choice of many.
